Children’s Portraits designed for YOU!

Although I now specialize in black and white children’s portraits I have 30+ years experience with colour. When properly designed a colour child portrait can be almost as timeless as a B&W one. Many times parents have a cute outfit that they love. Sometimes it was a gift from a special relative. Often these outfits are very colourful. The issue is that these outfits can tend to overpower the child’s face and the portrait is about the clothing.

When children’s portraits are well designed, with good lighting and composition they can be very powerful. Add in good story-telling and you have a great photograph with emotion. Whether it is a smile or a subdued expression the face remains the main subject.

Take this portrait of a sweet little girl on a swing. She’s cute and has a nice smile and that alone will make her parents happy. But there’s more to it than that. The highlights on her face draw your attention into the portrait. The composition is strong and the white background has been made a light gray so it doesn’t over power her face. The lighting has come in across her little dress so we can see some of the texture which stops it from going a very bright white. The pink flowers pull out the rosiness in her cheeks. Her teddy bear is with her but not looking at us sit is an accent and not a distraction. The jewellery box is placed so it falls in the shadow of the swing so the reflective metal doesn’t shine. I gave her a piece of jewellery to hold so her hands are not waving around and her little fingers are visible. And then to add to the cuteness I had her point her toes together (just joking – that was all her!!).

So as you can see there is much thought that goes into my children’s portraits. There’s no doubt that not all children are this easy to work with. But if we work together to discover what you want from your portrait we have a higher chance of success.
