Producing a creative dance portrait is a lot of fun! Now – I’ll be the first to admit I know very little about dance. But when I joined Pinterest it was the gorgeous images of dancers that filled my board, that I kept “pinning”. And the ones involving dancers and flour just fascinated me! But trial and error with an open bag of the white powder in my studio was not high on my list of things I needed to try. But I know a thing or two about imagination and visualization. And I’m pretty good at painting in a digital environment. So I began exploring which led to learning some new techniques and before I knew it that right side of my brain just took over! Something FUN! EXPRESSIVE! – a creative dance portrait that let it all go!
I had no idea what Laura could do. I had no idea what I wanted her to do – except jump! So jump she did. Arms up, arms out, legs forward and back, smiling and serious. I think she was getting a little tired but there was no “give up” in this girl. I knew when this image appeared on the back of my camera I had what I needed. It’s Spring and this image just SCREAMED ” Joy! Freedom! – Here I Come!
To complete this creative dance portrait I just put my brush to tablet and started to paint. Adding powder is a lot of trial and error. There is no one right way – but there are a lot of “Nope – that don’t work” and “there’s no way the light would do that!”. So eventually the powder looks good and then I pick a colour that feels right. This is sometimes obvious but as often as not I play with different colours until I’m overcome with emotion and then I’m done.
