The day started with us heading out of Banff up towards Lake Louise but then I noticed I had not checked the gas gauge and we had to return to Banff to fill up 🙁 Bad Kirk. But the skies were clear and we got to see the mountains that were only fog and cloud thru raindrop covered glasses yesterday. Got to Lake Louise as Pam wanted to see that beautiful pristine green lake BUT what were we thinking – it is only May and the lake was still covered in ice! – and to boot it snowed there last night so there was some additional snow on top of the ice! Banff area has the most premium wildlife highway overpasses I have ever seen. Quite fancy with attractive stonemason work and design they are located every 25 km or so just so the animals can safely get from side to side 🙂
So we headed south towards Pincher Creek/Lethbridge via route 22 which paralleled the Rockies but ran thru the foothills. It made for some great views. Also I think Alberta has a minimum sign budget because the speed limit was only posted once and then nothing for a hundred Km! Of course I don’t think the police patrol it unless they get a call so I think the 100km is just a starting suggestion and then you decide what works best for you 🙂 Today’s wildlife count was 1 porcupine ( a blonde with highlites!), 1 elk and 1 Pronghorn antelope.
We got to Lethbridge ahead of schedule so chose to keep going to Great Falls, Montana. The border guard was awesome! Good sense of humour, pleasant and quick. AND for the first time in a very long time did not ask what I worked at and therefore did not give me a hard time for being a photographer and did not not check out my camera gear and did not hold me up. We got to Great Falls about 8:15 pm checked into a Motel 6 and went for supper and beers. I had a great Bison burger.
Took a few photos today but the sky at the end of our journey was very striking – very dark and ominous but the sun was hitting the rolling hills for a nice contrast.
