Today was a whole different kettle of fish! We left the motel at 0700 and it was already 70 F and sunny! We decided to go to Macon, Georgia through the backroads and without using the GPS since we had lots of time. I love how well the pavement holds up down here in the South – in the middle of absolutely nowhere, the roads are paved and in great shape.
It was a very hot (88 F ) and humid day which we enjoyed immensely. We did get a little lost and overshot Macon but eventually we got there in time to go on a tour of an old plantation home of some very rich people – WOW!!! What an amazing home which has been restored but with much of the original furnishings, wall and floor coverings and decor. Check this out – http://www.hayhousemacon.org
After the tour Pam went shopping for an hour for some new work clothes and then we were off in a southerly direction again. This time we wanted to get as close as possible to tomorrow’s planned tour of the Okefenokee Swamp so after only 30 minutes on the interstate we were on the backroads again. The thing with backroads is that you are not often close to bigger towns which means minimal motels. Now it’s already night time and I really dislike riding after dusk due to reduced visibility and increased animal activity. We finally got to a town with a motel but it was full up except for a “smoking” room. The clerk says it’s another 26 miles to the next town with a motel. So off we go through the backroads of southern Georgia to Waycross where we find a Motel 6 located right next to an Applebees!! It’s now 15 hours since we hit the road so can you say BEER! (and supper of course).
