Awesome! The only word to describe today. Sunny from the time I left Thomasville, NC until I arrived in Columbus, Ga. Oh yeah – except for riding through a small thunderstorm (maybe 15 minutes) in Augusta. But it rained HARD and those raindrops were large. Good rain gear kept me dry. I also dodged five more t-storms by veering off course here and there and getting lucky. Did get a few drops as I skirted their edges but not enough to stop and put on the gear!
Didn’t get a chance to check the temp but I’m sure it was in the 80’s and no wind. It was my first t-shirt day and I definitely got sun-kissed.
Got a chance to visit a colleague in South Carolina and saw her large and beautiful studio. She does some wonderful oil paintings using her portraits on canvas as the base. I saw many Magnolia trees and one of them was about 40′ high and 40′ wide!! Even I could smell that one – and as my wife will tell you my sniffer doesn’t work very well.
The dirt down here is mostly yellow or grey but at one point I though I was lost because for one 10 mile stretch the dirt was as red as PEI! But Georgia is pretty flat and along my route there were not many lakes or ponds (only 4 I can remember). But the people are great and very friendly.
I’m headed into Alabama in the morning and will end up somewhere in Mississippi tomorrow night. Still going to be on US Route 80 and hope to see more small towns and eat at a couple more diners. Ate breakfast at the Flopeye Cafe in SC this morning and the ham was so salty I won’t need any more for the rest of my trip! But the service was great and the helpings were “a plenty”.
That’s it for now but I’ll leave you with a photo of the rain I drove through and USA few others from the last couple of days.
