As family photographers Truro for over 24 years we’ve seen some changes in photography – but not in people!
Family Photographers Truro. Digital photos are nice – but why printed family portraits are important.
There are many reasons why a printed family portrait is important. Studies show that seeing themselves as part of a family unit (whatever that is for you) improves a child’s self-esteem. It is a reinforcement. They are loved enough to be on the wall for the whole world to see. Many of us today have large flat screen TVs on our walls. Maybe along side colourful prints from a department store. Or possibly a local artist. If our families are not there too what is the subtle (and unintended) message we are sending? And where do we see ourselves most often? How about the mirror? And what do we do when we look in the mirror . . . we look for faults. We see the lines we want covered up. The hair that isn’t there. The weight that is! But in a properly created and finished wall portrait we see the beauty that is us.
This portrait is almost 15 years old!
I know because it’s mine. It’s a simple studio self-portrait. I say simple because it represents what we looked like back then. No props. No background. Nothing except the most important parts of my life. Our family was complete and we wanted to make sure we had that well documented. If you didn’t know me before 2008 then you’ve never seen me without a goatee – until now! We gave these out with Christmas cards that year so that everyone who was important to us had the same tangible memory that we had. But we also put one on our wall as an 24″ accent piece rather than a masterpiece. Remember we’ve been family photographers Truro for over 24 years.

I love it today even more than I did in 2008. WHY? Because it’s a part of our family history. This truly represents what our lives were about at that time. My wife and I had taken up long distance motorcycling (we’re talking weeks NOT days!). Our son was all about bicycling everywhere he wanted to go (from Stewiacke to Masstown and beyond). Daughter was into her pet bunnies -because we wouldn’t allow her to have a black Labrador Retriever. We felt our two Westies was enough dogs. To add more history, this image was created in our old backyard (we have since moved). This portrait was proudly displayed as the 56″ focal point in our living and of course we still have it today.

So, advance 13 years and we’re in a new home, the kids have grown and the pets have changed. As a portrait artist it’s important to me that I practice what I preach. So I am always updating our family portrait. Some years we design and plan a portrait that will visually document who we are and other years we go a little simpler. The bunnies have moved in with new families, we had lost our oldest Westie and our daughter finally had her black Lab!! My goatee is now pretty much a permanent fixture. This our new backyard so it just felt like THE place to be.

As you can see from the first portrait we have changed a bit! Again we made sure to send out to family but also have one in our living room as a 24″ accent piece alongside several others.
