The Ken Dryden pose!

Being a hockey photographer means getting a little creative with my backgrounds.

I’m not a high volume hockey photographer so I can be a little more creative with the more fine art portraits I do create. The idea for this set came to me after seeing a what a good friend and colleague was doing in the U.S.A. for baseball. I figured being in a hockey crazy country I should be able to find lots of great props and old jerseys, etc. I was wrong! I searched antique shops in person and online, Kijiji and eBay but vintage hockey stuff is very hard to locate. And when you do most of it is priced for collectors which isn’t reasonable!

As you can see I did manage to find a few pieces of vintage equipment and clothing. It’s a good thing these hockey photos aren’t “scratch and sniff” because those goalie pads are definitely “odoriferous”! As a hockey photographer I wanted to add to the look of these portraits and give them some feeling. So I use a lighting technique I usually reserve for my black and white portraits. Then I added special customized processing and I get this look and feel that my clients are loving!

This wonderful set is large enough for siblings and even your family! For many hockey is very much a family affair. SO what better way to record that intense love of the game than in an heirloom portrait! What a great focal point for your rec room or games room. Maybe even your hockey player’s bedroom. You can bring some of your own props if you have them. Like mom’s, dad’s or grandads old hockey gear or a special trophy.
