This was the 32nd year for the International Wall Portrait Conference which is hosted by my mentor and extraordinary Portraitist, Ken Whitmire. Ken is 85 years old and can still outwork almost any living person I know! This was my 4th time travelling to the west coast for this always changing event. It is known worldwide for the quality of education regarding Wall Portraits. Attendees have come from as far away as Ireland and Australia! This year Ken fielded the most incredible line-up of presenters and mentors so I made a last minute decision to go.
Unlike most other photographic education opportunities, this one has a single focus. The producing of world class, personalized, canvas Wall Art of children and families is it! Nothing more – nothing less. From techniques on listening to what clients want to helping them express what they like. From planning a wall portrait in the style they like to creating it. From composition to lighting to the best method of presenting it. And that’s only the first day and a half!
This year all of the top Portrait Artists were talking about the mixed media portraits ( as I call them “hybrid paintings”). From New York to California, from DC to Tennessee, from Seattle to Nova Scotia we were all talking about the popularity of these canvas portraits! It was inspiring as we gave each other ideas. It was exciting because the quality and uniqueness of these hand-painted wall portraits is allowing true Portrait Artists to exhibit our talents! It was motivating because we all challenged each other to ensure the portrait buying public (that’s you!) is aware of this option.
