Day 2 – a cornucopia of sights and weather

On the road before 0700 again and it looked promising. Sun was shining but it was still coolish. Took the western route to avoid Boston and New York plus it is a little more scenic – but just a little. When you travel the Interstate you don’t see as much and you can’t stop anyways – the Stormtroopers frown on that:( But Mother Nature had a day planned that’s for sure! Before long the sun disappeared and it got foggy, then the fog turned into a dark cloud with water drops. This repeated itself a couple time but luckily the rain showers were short-lived. It remained overcast for much of the morning and then the sun came back but forgot the heat all the way through Penn., Maryland and W. Va. That is until I hit the Virginia border! BOOM – 70+ degrees and no wind but that was around 1630.
Saw many, deer, opossum and raccoons today but they were all just waiting to be a part of Roadkill Stew! They say Penn. has the highest deer population in the US and I lost track of how many died last night – must have been the full moon thing! But there sure were a lot of hawks on the go today and I saw the coolest thing. One of them swooped right in front of me into the ditch and grabbed a field mouse – honestly if I had been going any faster we would have collided! It was so close I could see the points on the talons!! . . . And I ducked!!
Actually made it to Roanake,Va tonite and the odometer reads 2202 km since I left home Saturday morning. I did exactly 1100 yesterday so that makes 1102 today. I’m only 2 1/2 hours away from Greensboro where I hope to see a Denturist to fix my tooth and then on to visit my buddy, Larry and his wonderful wife, Dana in High Point,NC – just a couple miles from Greensboro.
No real idiots on the road for two days although they sure like to drive fast and the ” Bears were thick as bugs on a bumper”. Only saw one from Truro to the US border yesterday but the medians were almost like police parking lots after that. If they had a quota they sure as heck made it today!
Had my first feed of grits for supper and although they aren’t much to type about the shrimp that came with sure made up for it! Cracker Barrel sure knows how to service travelers – I was in and out in about 15 minutes and ” fast food” it wasn’t -love their home-cookin.
Well, I better get to sleep since the alarm is set for 0600 again. But just one more thing – by stopping at the Virginia Welcome Center and picking up a “motel coupon book” I got a great motel room for $39.95 including continental breakfast and covered parking spot for the bike – how the hell do they make money at that?
