Summer Family Portrait

As one of the top photographers in Nova Scotia we are now booking for this summer

As one of the top photographers in Nova Scotia, Kirk is proud to be celebrating 25 years in business. And in fact he began to be paid to photograph families in February of 1984 while attending college and working part-time in the agricultural industry. That’s 35 years!! But just imagine – he’s been able to photograph weddings and children of the children of those he began photographing all those years ago.

Throughout those years Kirk has grown and changed . . . just like the world. For instance, he was one of the very first portrait artists in Nova Scotia to switch completely from film to digital in 2000. Then he completed and earned his Master’s of Photographic Arts in 2001. However, Kirk has always wanted his clients to receive the best – so he strived to be the best he could be. Therefore in 2007 he began travelling to Washington state to be mentored by The Top Portrait Artist in North America.

Top Portraitist, Ken Whitmire

The late Ken Whitmire – often referred to as “the grandfather of wall portraiture” took Kirk under his wing. It was here that the artist within came to the surface. Kirk learned the importance of space, position, line and tone from Ken. Who learned them from studying the Old Masters and contemporary painters of history. Ken taught Kirk the importance of choosing the proper lens for every situation. This is what ensures the perspective is correct.  And finally, the finished size of your family portrait must be appropriate. Not too big and not too small – Juuuust Right. When all of these points come together properly it makes the portrait “look so real” – “like you’re standing right there”. Ken always referred to family wall portraits as “furniture for your walls. You might want to keep in mind in ten years you would gladly sell other furniture for what you paid for it. However this “furniture” you probably wouldn’t sell for 5X what you paid for it due to the emotional value it will have.

Of course, it didn’t stop there. Kirk is a “lifelong learner” so his nest step was to learn painting. however, not with actual wet paint and a camel hair brush. But rather with several digital programs which allow him to use a digital stylus and tablet. It is this combination which allows artists like Kirk to make any brush and type of paint. In particular, these programs allow for the blending of the best qualities of painting and photography to give you a portrait like no other. A true piece of art which is obviously your family.  Consider the question which is often asked, “is it a photograph or a painting?”  To which Kirk and his clients answer with a smile, “Yes.”
